Oriented Home is written from Japan, by someone who works with buildings and studies feng shui rather than the other way round.

Two voices, kept apart

Every guide here does one unusual thing. It separates what tradition says from what actually changes a room, and it sets them in different typefaces so you can see at a glance which one you are reading.

Tradition is worth knowing. A south-facing entry, a mirror opposite a door, a bed under a beam — these have meant something to people for a long time, and that is reason enough to report them accurately. But whether a room is warm, bright, quiet, and easy to walk through is a different question with different answers, and mixing the two helps nobody.

What you will not find

• Claims that an object will fix your health, your money, or your luck
• Advice presented as ancient when it was invented for a catalogue
• Product lists with no floor plan behind them
